Back At It!

0

Spring break is now over and I’m back at the academics. I was super busy over the break and actually slept less than I normally do. The craziness started Wednesday with the FIRST Robotics Competition Hawaii Regional. Before I go into that, how my break started was absolutely awesome, a trip to the north shore, specifically Waimea Bay.

We started at 14:00 in one of the school vans. With a stop at safeway to get provisions and for me. a quick stop by L&L, we were on our way to the north shore. Once there, we found a place for our stuff to be while we went swimming. The water was incredibly clear. I had kept hearing rumors about how clear the water was in Hawaii, but in my few months of living here, I hadn’t seen it and was beginning to think people were not telling the truth. The clear, warm, water was nice, but it wasn’t the best part of being in the water at Waimea, for that, you needed to put your head under the water and listen. Seemingly far away but coming from everywhere, was the sound of the song of whales, very humbling. After we were done swimming, it was getting late so we decided it was time for s’mores. The sunset was beautiful and everyone went home happy.

Margeaux, the RA from Mokihana, underwater. It’s hard to tell but the visibiulity is about 18-20 meters, to get this photo, I was about 5 meters away from her.

The group I was with, all good people to know.

The fire we cooked our marshmallows with, lighting them on fire was popular.

That’s root beer and it was delicious.

The robotics competition for me began on Wednesday with field set up. For the teams the competition began on Thursday and went to Saturday. This years game involved getting balls into trailers hooked on to the opposing teams robots. Field set up began with laying a carpet down.

Once the carpet is down points are measured off so that we know where to put the field elements

Then the parts are taken out of the boxes and placed on to the carpet.

This years game had a different playing surface than years past, where the past few years the game was played on the carpet, this year it was played on a slick surface of plastic for a low friction environment that was supposed to simulate the conditions of driving a robot on the moon.

I worked with a great group of people from the big island when setting up and during the competition.

I had a great break and hope that the break coincides with the robotics competition next year.

It’s Break Time

0

Spring break is upon me, my first spring break in Hawaii and what will I be doing? Volunteering my time to help out with the local FIRST Robotics Competition regional here in Hawaii! I have helped my home town’s competition for 2 years now, but since I wasn’t home this year for it, I can do what I can here.

This being the week before spring break, I had lots of midterms to occupy my time (hence the not posting for a while). A particularly awesome one was the MARS 1020 practical exam. We have 4 hours of boat time to use, but the practical only takes about an hour, so what do we do with the extra 3 hours? Go whale watching, that’s what!

That thing is a whale, they tend to pop out of the water in unexpected location, so it can be hard to get a good photo of them.

Some of the awesome boat crew!

A friendly looking channel marker!

I’ll have photos of the competition later next week.

In-N-Out!

0

Are you a prospective student from the southwest United Sates and are worried about how you’ll be able to live without In-N-Out? It was major topic of discussion at the so-cal summer send off party last year. Many people said their their “last meal” before flying to Hawaii would be a burger form In-N-Out. Well fear not my friends, there is a place in Kailua (and Waikiki) where you can get your burger fix should you need one.

Teddy’s Bigger Burger in Kailua has been serving as our In-N-Out replacement since last semester. It has a classic 50s looks about the place, with period appropriate decorations and tunes playing. It offers a wider selection than In-N-Out, so I haven’t quite honed in on a favorite menu item. I’m still in the process of trying different things to see what I like.

Ordering one of their burgers from friendly people!

I decided to get some onion rings this time per suggestion of my dad back home, usually I get their french fries.

I was raised on spicy foods so I decided to try the cajun burger. I’ve gotten the western and “normal” burgers in the past.

A few bites in and you can see see juicy meat and the cajun seasoning getting all over everything

I plan on going back a few more times and trying different things. A friend who was with me got the “spud burger.” I think I might try that next time.

My Crazy Schedule

0

I use a calendar program to map out what I’m doing during the week and this is one of those weeks where everything seemed to converge. Not a problem, I’ve dealt with it before. Bellow you can see my schedule for the week, it looks more intimidating than it actually is. The most important things are in green, which is class time. In blue are other commitments and what I think I should be studying at that moment, more as a reminder to me. Purple is the schedule of the library and orange is dining times.
